Yes, dosus facit venenum but it's more complex than that... For example all the antivaccine nutters went ape over thimerosal (or thiomersal depending which side of the pond you're on) because it contains MERCURY which is a DANGEROUS NEUROTOXIN. Mercury exposure sent Victorian milliners nuts, after all (hence 'mad as a hatter') and inject it into children!! OH! THE CHILDREN! WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?? Anyway, it gets metabolised into ethyl mercury which isn't methyl mercury (wot you get from tuna) and certainly not elemental mercury like wot used to be in thermometers. The pharmacokinetic profile of ethyl mercury is substantially different from that of methyl mercury; the half-life of ethyl mercury is less than a week compared to methyl mercury (1.5 months) making exposure to ethyl mercury in blood comparatively brief. Also ethyl mercury is actively excreted via the gut unlike methyl mercury that accumulates in the body. So all the antivaccine nutters went ape shit and thimerosal was eventually removed from almost all vaccines purely to take the excuse away. But they set themselves up with a falsifiable argument - were thiomersal the cause of autism (which they claimed) you would expect the rates to go down. They didn't. They increased. There was an interesting study in Poland where they had three cohorts of kids: MMR, separate vaccines and unvaccinated. ASD rates were lowest in the MMR group. Which is unsurprising as all three are neurotropic viruses - they go to the nerves - and while this wasn't the question this particular study was asking and there were other confounders savour with me the irony that it may be the case that MMR may in fact be protective against ASDs.... It's biology. It's complicated.....

Adjuvants are added to vaccines to stimulate the immune system and potentiate its response. In addition to this it also means you use less antigen in the vaccine (so you can make more doses). The antivaccine nut jobs have been accusing various ingredients (whether preservatives or adjuvants) for years and when their argument against one is completely disproved they move on to the next. First it was thimerosal, now it’s aluminium where people don’t understand not just biochemistry but basic school-level chemistry – for example the difference between elemental Al or Hg and their salts. Mercury in thimerosal has been debunked now they are claiming an Alzheimer’s / aluminium link.

Anyone claiming neurotoxic effects from vaccines quite simply hasn’t got a fucking clue what they’re on about. Happy to debunk any specific claims!!

I passed on your article and was asked about the adjuvants. It has been suggested that it is more likely to be these that are the neuro-toxins which cause most of the problems, not the antigens themselves. Can you enlighten me please?
